Christmas in July

What is Christmas in July?

You've heard it, but do you know where "Christmas in July" originated? Let's do a quick recap on how Christmas in July came to be:

The celebration dates back to a small girls summer camp, Keystone Camp, in Brevard, North Carolina. The camp co-founder began celebrating Christmas in July 91 years ago. Fanny Holt thought that celebrating Christmas in July would break up the daily routine, which is why they dedicated July 24th and July 25th to the event. Some festivities during this time included a camp swim followed by opening gifts.

Christmas in July started to gain popularity when a 1940 film, Christmas in July, debuted. The movie was adapted from Preston Sturges's play "A Cup of Coffee." Although the title states Christmas, the movie actually has nothing to do with Christmas. After this movie, other Christmas in July celebrations began to run across the US.

Then, in the 1950's, shops began to use the term. Retailers would have sales and events to lure people in to spend money during the summer. Fast forward to 2024, and retailers and other companies still have sales and events promoting Christmas in July. Some of the companies holding sales for Christmas in July are as follows:

- Bed Bath & Beyond

- Hotels. If you've never been to the Grand Canyon, book your stay at The Grand Hotel starting July 17th!

- Walmart
